How to Repair the Glaze on Ceramic Tile. How to Repair the Glaze on Ceramic Tile.
Ceramic tile usually comes pre- glazed with a slick, clear coating on the surface. When that glaze gets dull and worn you can restore it with the same kind of gloss that's used on hardwood floors. Polyurethane goes on as a clear liquid and dries into a glass- like shell, approximating the look of the original tile glaze. The biggest challenge is getting the polyurethane to fully adhere. For this reason use oil- based polyurethane even though it's harder to work with and takes longer to dry than water- based polyurethane.
Things Needed. Power belt sander. Medium- grit aluminum oxide sandpaper. Oil- based polyurethane.
Paintbrush. Extra fine regular sandpaper. Step 1. Buff the entire surface of each ceramic tile with your power belt sander and aluminum oxide sandpaper, dulling the existing glaze as much as possible. Don't sand the grout lines. Step 2. Step 3. Open your oil- based polyurethane and gently stir it. Don't shake the can, as this will create bubbles in the gloss.
Spread it over each ceramic tile with paintbrush, brushing it on in smooth, even coats with the brush strokes all going in the same direction. Don't brush it onto the grout but just onto the tiles.
Step 4. Let the polyurethane dry for 2. Step 5. Lightly buff the dried polyurethane with extra fine regular sandpaper by hand. Buff just enough to dull the shine. Apply a second coat of polyurethane in the same manner.
Step 6. Let the second coat set for 2. Buff it with extra fine sandpaper, wipe off the dust and add a third layer of polyurethane. Let the third layer set for 4. Warnings. Ventilate the room when applying the polyurethane.
